Empowering Para-Athletes Across the Commonwealth

In June 2024, over 80 Para-athletes and coaches from 21 Commonwealth nations and territories convened at the University of Birmingham for the Global GAPS Camp. This initiative, known as GAPS (Gather, Adjust, Prepare, Sustain), is a flagship program by Commonwealth Sport aimed at fostering development and inclusion in Para-sports.

The camp, held from June 8 to 17, provided participants with intensive training in Para Powerlifting and Para Table Tennis. Beyond athletic development, the program emphasized personal growth, cultural exchange, and the building of a supportive community among athletes and coaches.

Representatives hailed from diverse regions, including Barbados, Cameroon, Canada, Cyprus, England, Fiji, The Gambia, Guyana, Jersey, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Scotland, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Togo, Tonga, Uganda, and Zambia. This diverse gathering underscored the unifying power of sport and the shared commitment to inclusivity and excellence.

The Global GAPS Camp stands as a testament to the transformative impact of collaborative efforts in sports, highlighting the importance of providing equitable opportunities for all athletes, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities.
