In June 2024, the Global GAPS Camp brought together over 80 Para-athletes and coaches from 21 Commonwealth nations at the University of Birmingham. This initiative, known as GAPS (Gather, Adjust, Prepare, Sustain), is a flagship program by Commonwealth Sport aimed at fostering development and inclusion in Para-sports.
Throughout the camp, participants engaged in intensive training sessions in Para Powerlifting and Para Table Tennis. Beyond athletic development, the program emphasized personal growth, cultural exchange, and the building of a supportive community among athletes and coaches.
For many attendees, this was their first experience traveling abroad, stepping into new environments, and connecting with peers from diverse backgrounds. The camp not only enhanced their sporting skills but also instilled a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.
As one South African Para Table Tennis athlete, Sthabile Mnyandu, shared:
“Previously I lacked interaction. GAPS has taught me how to interact with people.”
The Global GAPS Camp stands as a testament to the transformative impact of collaborative efforts in sports, highlighting the importance of providing equitable opportunities for all athletes, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities.
